Fly into Calgary International Airport (YYC) and drive 90 minutes west on the Trans-Canada Highway. Car rental is almost essential for exploring the park โ many of the best spots are not accessible by public transit. Alternatively, Brewster Express runs coach service from Calgary to Banff Town and Lake Louise.
Flight tip: Calgary is often cheaper to fly into than Vancouver for Albertan destinations. Check both YYC and YVR when searching โ connecting via Vancouver can sometimes save money.
Banff has exceptional wildlife viewing. Elk roam freely through Banff townsite โ sometimes blocking traffic on Banff Avenue. Grizzly and black bears are active from spring through fall; always carry bear spray and make noise on trails. Mountain goats and bighorn sheep are commonly spotted near the Icefields Parkway. Lucky visitors may spot wolves, lynx, or wolverines.
A Parks Canada Discovery Pass is required to enter Banff โ $75 CAD for individuals, $150 for families (annual pass). Moraine Lake Road now requires shuttle reservations which sell out months in advance. Book as soon as your dates are confirmed. Summer is extremely busy โ visit in September or October for fewer crowds and fall colours.
Plain of Six Glaciers (14km round trip) starts at Lake Louise and leads to a historic teahouse with views of six glaciers. Moderate difficulty, genuinely one of the best hikes in Canada.
Larch Valley / Sentinel Pass (11.5km) from Moraine Lake is stunning in late September when the larch trees turn gold โ one of Canada's most breathtaking seasonal displays.
Sulphur Mountain Trail (11km return) is a steady climb to the gondola summit โ save money by hiking up and taking the gondola down.
