Quebec City Travel Guide 2026 — The Most European City in North America
FlightDay Blog·March 25, 2026·8 min read
Quebec City feels more European than any other city in North America. Walking the cobblestone streets of Old Quebec within its 400-year-old fortifications, past the iconic Château Frontenac and down to the Lower Town's boutiques and restaurants, it's easy to forget you're in Canada.
Old Quebec — A UNESCO World Heritage Site
The historic district of Old Quebec is divided into Upper Town and Lower Town, connected by the famous Funicular railway. The Château Frontenac, perched dramatically above the St. Lawrence River, is one of the most photographed hotels in the world.
The Dufferin Terrace boardwalk offers some of the best views in the city, especially at sunset over the St. Lawrence.
Must-See Attractions
- Plains of Abraham — where the British defeated the French in 1759, now a beautiful park
- Musée de la Civilisation — one of Canada's best museums
- Quartier Petit Champlain — the Lower Town's charming shopping district
- La Citadelle — an active military fortress with Changing of the Guard ceremony in summer
- Montmorency Falls — 15 minutes from the city, higher than Niagara
Quebec Winter Carnival
The Quebec Winter Carnival (January-February) is one of the world's largest winter festivals. Ice sculptures, canoe races on the semi-frozen St. Lawrence, and famous snow slides make it one of Canada's most unique experiences.
Tips
Book accommodation months in advance for Winter Carnival. Late January is the most atmospheric time to visit.
